The "Laboratory of the Enlightenment" is an interdisciplinary research network created by the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena. Its objective is to study the rise of modernity during the long 18th century (circa 1690 to 1830) and to correlate this with contemporary developments in state, society, religion and science, but also in the arts and humanities. The research focus can be further narrowed down: it is to compare, primarily on the structural and discursive levels, social formations in the long 18th century with those in the opening decade of the 21st century, both of which have been seen as hybrid, transformative and open. The aim is twofold: to gain new insights into the 18th century and to enunciate a specific understanding of the present.

Through its programme of studies the research centre supports the work not just of its own scholars but also of visiting scholars from other parts of Germany or beyond. Much attention is given to nurturing young academic talent under the auspices of the doctoral school.
